So at this point I believe all the major comic movies have been released and I'm betting many of us have seen at least one of them. What was everyone's thoughts? Are superhero movies becoming stale? Getting better and better? Some yes, some no?

Personally I really liked the Marvel movies this year, I really enjoyed the Captain America and Thor films and I thought X-Men: First Class was the best of that series. On the other hand I was very disappointed by Green Lantern and I really wanted to like that movie. I don't mind 80% (just guessing) of tent-pole movies being comics adaptations but I'm seeing more and more that people are falling out of love with the big superhero movie. I hope The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises reinvigorate the genre next year, comic books are better than action-comedy remakes of 70s and 80s tv shows at the very least.

I hope the world isn't the Matrix. I'd hate to be extracted and have my "real" name be OtterWally.

I agree pretty much with what you said in respect to how the four major ones lined up. Thor and Cap were great, both were perfectly cast (both stars, villians and supporting cast) and seeing those two guys stand next to Iron Man next year fills me with excitement.

X-Men First class was great. Yeah, it has some continuity issues with X-Men 3 and Wolverine Origins, but the story was probably the best one yet and I think Michael Fassbender has the makings of a star and probably gave a better portrayal of Magneto than Ian McKellan (whom I love as well, but I think Fassbender is closer to the comics, full of rage and yet still having that vunerable side).

Green Lantern was... well it just was. It wasn't nearly as awful as some of the early reviews made it out to be (comparing it to Transformers 2) but it was kind of a mess. I think there was a good movie in there somewhere, Mark Strong's Sinestro was awesome, Peter Sarsgaard's Hector Hammond was delightfully creepy through most of it, and Ryan Reynolds has proven himself to be a capable leading man in the past, but the script was just a mess. It tried to cram in too much in too little time (and I get a strong impression there will be quite a few deleted scenes on the eventual DVD release), never giving the audience a chance to really care about what's happening. I admit that any Green Lantern film is likely hard to pull off because there is so many elements ("So there's this magic space lamp that powers a ring that can do almost anything given by little blue midgets to a bunch of intergalatic space police and then there is the color yellow...") but I still think it could have been more streamlined and better told than this.

I don't think people are necessarily falling out of love with superhero films, but I do suspect that the honeymoon phase is over, at least for a while. The last few years have been a great time to be a superhero film fan, but I suspect Marvel is going to try to move into some of their properties that aren't quite so obviously "cape and tights" like, guys like Dr. Strange, Nick Fury and/or SHIELD, the Runaways, etc stuff that fit into their Marvel Movieverse but approach it at a different angle than the Avengers related films. (DC/Warner Bros I suspect is going to try to copy the success of Marvel and build towards a Justice League franchise and mostly come up as a Johnny-come-lately, though the individual films might still be entertaining).

Betting that many, instead of all, of us saw at least one is a good bet. Personally, I saw a lot of movies this summer - but all on home video with friends, none in cinemas. Go figure.
